KACWASCO Leverages Smart Metering Technology to Enhance Water Management and Service Delivery

February 9, 2025 admin 0 Comments

The Kakamega County Water and Sanitation Company (KACWASCO) has taken a major step towards improving water service delivery by embracing smart metering technology. In line with its strategic focus on operational efficiency and customer satisfaction, KACWASCO has partnered with Go Soft Company, a leading provider of smart metering solutions, to pilot ultrasonic smart meters for enhanced water management.

A two-year Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between KACWASCO and Go Soft Company, underscoring the commitment of the utility to leverage innovative technology for improved service delivery. This initiative aligns with the resolutions of KACWASCO’s Board of Directors to explore strategic partnerships that support modernization and efficiency in water service provision.

The pilot project will roll out smart meters across various operational zones, including production water meters, transmission meters, bulk water meters, and domestic consumer meters. The introduction of smart metering is expected to yield significant benefits, such as:

  • Real-time monitoring of water consumption
  • Increased accuracy in water measurement
  • Enhanced operational efficiency
  • Reduction in non-revenue water (NRW)
  • Improved customer complaint management
  • Automated meter reading and billing
  • Automated water controls

A key feature of this initiative is the customer-facing mobile application, which will allow consumers to monitor their water consumption in real time. Additionally, the app will provide seamless bill payment options, improving transparency and enhancing revenue collection efficiency.

KACWASCO MD Eng. Michael Ogol emphasized the transformative impact of smart metering noting that it will enhance efficiency and improved service delivery by enabling the water utility to make data-driven decisions, and empowering their customers with greater control over their consumption. Similarly, Go Soft MD Ms. Christine Tantuo echoed the MD’s sentiments, highlighting that their smart metering technology is designed to deliver long-term benefits to both the utility and its customers.

The Water and Sanitation Providers Association (WASPA) recognizes the crucial role of smart metering in enhancing efficiency, reducing water losses, and improving customer service. By embracing such technological advancements, water utilities can significantly improve their service delivery models, ensuring better resource allocation and increased customer satisfaction.
