Water is a fundamental resource that affects most aspects of our lives. In most regions, women bear the responsibility of water management within their household. Hence, including women in decision-making roles within utilities is a necessary action as they guide the sector accordingly improving how specific needs and challenges faced by women are addressed.
Further, in the water and Sanitation sector, where technical expertise is often seen as male-dominated, mainstreaming gender equality is essential. Kakamega County Water and Sanitation Services (KACWASCO) is making waves by prioritizing gender mainstreaming. This commitment, recently highlighted by the company’s Gender Mainstreaming Committee, goes beyond following regulations; it aims to create a more inclusive and empowered workforce.
The committee chaired by Human Resource Manager CHRP Linda Ongadi noted that it is committed to ensuring compliance with gender laws and procedures. Their dedication extends to integrating gender considerations into every decision-making process to address inequalities and empower all genders. With a more gender-inclusive workforce, it has been seen to drive innovations and bring on board a variety of perspectives enhancing the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the water utility.
KACWASCO’s ongoing commitment to gender mainstreaming is an adherence to the two-thirds rule and the development of a Gender Mainstreaming Policy to guide operations. The committee’s efforts to establish a comprehensive institutional structure and conduct sensitization programs on gender mainstreaming are in forward gear.
The Company’s Gender Equality Action Plan during the meeting outlines specific steps to increase female representation in engineering, project management, and other technical areas, while also providing support for women’s empowerment initiatives within the company.
KACWASCO is currently providing clean, safe, and quality water to approximately 78% of the Kakamega County urban and peri-urban population (Estimated to be 432,284). It provides sanitation services to approximately 14% of the population within its coverage area. Despite the various challenges, KACWASCO is on a journey to connect the entire population in the areas of supply to improved water and sanitation services. Water and Sanitation services to the rural population are provided by Kakamega County Rural Water and Sanitation Company recently formulated by the county government.
