WASPA and Equity Bank Launch Tree Planting Initiative to Bolster Environmental Conservation and Climate Resilience

May 30, 2026 admin 0 Comments

In a significant milestone for Kenya’s environmental conservation journey, the Water and Sanitation Providers Association (WASPA) and Equity Bank Limited have jointly launched the WASPA/Equity Tree Planting Initiative at Rurii Primary School in Murang’a County. The initiative comes at a critical time when climate change continues to threaten Kenya’s water towers, catchment areas, and the broader ecosystem that sustains millions of lives.

Speaking at the launch, WASPA Board Chair Thomas Odongo underscored the urgency of the partnership, noting that Water Service Providers (WSPs) have a direct and vested interest in protecting the natural water sources upon which their operations depend. Deforestation and land degradation have accelerated the drying up of rivers, reduced groundwater recharge, and compromised the integrity of key catchment areas — challenges that WSPs across the country continue to confront.

Through the initiative’s first cohort, 36 Water Service Providers will collectively plant 200,000 tree seedlings; 170,000 indigenous species and 30,000 fruit trees directly contributing to Kenya’s ambitious national target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032. The deliberate prioritization of indigenous tree species carries significant environmental value, as these trees are better adapted to local ecosystems, support biodiversity, and are more effective at soil conservation and water retention in catchment zones.

To kickstart this program, 10,000 fruit trees were distributed to primary schools across Murang’a County. Murang’a Water & Sanitation Company Ltd (MUWASCO) Managing Director Eng. Daniel Nganga has highlighted that beyond the environmental benefits, this will support food security and child nutrition while instilling a culture of environmental stewardship among the next generation.

Equity Bank Murang’a Branch Manager Ken Irungu has reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to sustainability, recognising that healthy ecosystems are foundational to thriving communities. WASPA welcomes this partnership and looks forward to scaling this transformative programme to water utilities across the country, uniting the sector in safeguarding Kenya’s natural heritage for generations to come.
