1. What first drew you to the water and sanitation sector, and what has kept you committed to it over the years?

My journey into the water sector began during my studies in Water and Environmental Engineering at Egerton University, where I developed a deep appreciation for the role water plays in public health, economic growth, and environmental sustainability. Working across different water institutions in Kenya exposed me to the real challenges communities face in accessing reliable water services. What has kept me committed is seeing the tangible difference that improved water supply makes in people’s lives. Knowing that the work we do directly improves livelihoods and community wellbeing continues to inspire me to strengthen and innovate within the sector.

2. The water sector is still largely male-dominated. What challenges did you face in rising to leadership, and how did you navigate them?

The water sector, particularly in engineering and utility management, has historically been male dominated. As a woman in leadership, I sometimes had to work harder to prove my technical competence and leadership capability. I addressed this by remaining focused on performance, professionalism, and results. Delivering successful projects, strengthening institutional systems, and building strong teams helped establish confidence in my leadership. I also value mentorship and collaboration, which have been important in navigating challenges and supporting the growth of other professionals within the sector.

3. What leadership decision or initiative are you most proud of in your current role?

One initiative I am particularly proud of is the solarization of borehole pumping systems at Kikuyu Water Company. Our service area relies entirely on groundwater, and high electricity costs posed a serious threat to sustainable water production. By developing solarization concepts and mobilizing resources to implement them across 21 boreholes, we significantly reduced energy costs while improving the reliability of water supply. This initiative has increased water production, enabled the expansion of services to previously underserved communities, and strengthened the company’s financial sustainability. It has also become a benchmarking model for other water utilities.

4. This year’s International Women’s Day theme is “Give to Gain.” What have you given to the water sector through your leadership, and what do you believe the sector gains from having more women in leadership?

Through my leadership, I have sought to give the sector strong institutions, innovative solutions, and opportunities for the next generation of professionals. This includes developing strategic plans, strengthening operational systems, promoting sustainable technologies such as solar-powered water production, and mentoring young professionals entering the sector. When women take on leadership roles, the sector gains diverse perspectives, inclusive decision-making, and stronger engagement with communities. Women leaders help ensure that water services respond to the real needs of households and communities, ultimately strengthening service delivery and sustainability.

5. What advice would you give to young women considering a career in the water and sanitation sector?

I would encourage young women to pursue careers in the water and sanitation sector with confidence and determination. The sector offers meaningful opportunities to apply technical knowledge while directly improving people’s lives. Building a strong educational foundation, seeking mentorship, and remaining committed to continuous learning are important. Women should not be discouraged by perceptions that technical fields are male dominated. With dedication, resilience, and professionalism, they can excel and play a vital role in addressing Africa’s water challenges and shaping the future of the sector.
